Thank you to our generous Gala Sponsors! UW Medicine recently honored Dr. Jeff Chamberlain as the 2026 Inventor of the Year. Dr. Chamberlain is the Director of our Scientific Advisory Board and the Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Specialized Research Center at the University of Washington. He has worked on muscular dystrophy research for more than 40 years and has been instrumental in guiding the research funding of Friends of FSH Research since our inception in 2004. Congratulations Jeff! Board members Terry, Lynn, Rick and George, along with Jeff and Joel Chamberlain at the ceremony honoring Jeff. Research HighlightsPrecision targeting of mitochondria as a therapeutic for FSHD - Dr. Philipp Heher, Newcastle University - England In people with FSHD, the DUX4 gene initially causes muscle cell damage which often continues even if DUX4 is no longer active. Dr. Heher at Newcastle University in England has discovered that a reverse electron transfer (RET) process can generate large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) molecules which may be responsible for muscle cell damage. Dr. Heher is looking at how to reduce RET to suppress damaging ROS production and stop the persistent damage left behind by DUX4 expression. This project is co-funded by Friends of FSH Research, The Chris Carrino Foundation for FSHD, and the FSHD Canada Foundation. Help fund research to find a cure for FSHD.
