Postdoctoral Researcher

Leiden University

Matthijs Vlasveld is a biomedical scientist with expertise in toxicology, cell biology, and high‑content screening. He studied Bio‑Pharmaceutical Sciences at Leiden University, specialising in toxicology and the cellular mechanisms underlying adverse drug reactions. In 2018, he began his PhD at the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) in the Division of Cell Systems and Drug Safety. His doctoral work focused on the molecular mechanisms of adverse drug outcomes using high‑throughput imaging, fluorescent reporter cell models, and systems‑level data analysis. This research contributed to the identification of stress‑response pathways and biomarkers relevant for drug safety assessment. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Human Genetics at LUMC, he investigates the regulation of DUX4 in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, focusing on its sporadic expression and strategies to modulate DUX4 activity in affected muscle.
